Abhanga 1499
For today: the very-quarreling with Hari is sweet — fulfills all curiosity-affection; this is the household-style of insiders; when you call at the door, he comes face-to-face; Śiva must give what's asked, hand-to-hand.
The verse
Literal translation
English: Quarreling itself is gōḍa — fulfills all the kōḍa. Such is the gharīñcā mōḷā — known to the close-near. When hāka given at door — they come close, sāmōrīm. Tuka says: by Śiva — what is asked, into the hand must be given.
Word-by-word gloss
| Marathi | Meaning |
|---|---|
| भांडावें तें गोड | "bhāṇḍa (= quarrel) — itself — gōḍa (sweet)" |
| पुरे सकळ ही कोड | "fulfills (purē) — all — kōḍa (= curiosity / affectionate-play)" |
| ऐसा घरींचा या मोळा | "such (aisā) — gharīñcā (of this house) — mōḷā (= folk-fashion / way)" |
| ठावा निकटां जवळां | "known (ṭhāvā) — to (the) nikaṭa-javaḷa (= close-near)" |
| हाक देतां दारीं | "hāka (= loud call) — when given — at (the) door" |
| येती जवळी सामोरीं | "they come (yētī) — close — sāmōrīm (face-to-face)" |
| तुका म्हणे शिवें | "Tuka says — by Śiva" |
| मागितलें हातीं द्यावें | "what is asked-for — into (the) hand — must be given" |
| ॥२॥ | (sub-series end-marker) |
What it means
Quarreling-with-Hari-is-sweet abhang. Closes another sub-series at ॥२॥. The opening declaration: bhāṇḍāvēm tēm gōḍa — purē sakaḷa hī kōḍa — the quarrel itself — is gōḍa (sweet); — fulfills — all the kōḍa (= curiosity / playful-affection). Striking: the very-quarreling with Hari is sweet. Kōḍa — the playful-affection of intimacy. (Compare 1413's dharaṇēkarī and 1429's Viṭho-kaisā-vāñcalāsi — same quarrelsome-intimacy register; here it's named as sweet.)
The household-image: aisā gharīñcā yā mōḷā — ṭhāvā nikaṭām javaḷām — such is the gharīñcā mōḷā (= the household's folk-fashion / family-style); — known to the nikaṭa-javaḷa (= close-near ones). This is the family-style; only those-close-and-near know it. (= bhakti-as-family-intimacy; the quarrelsome-but-loving household-mode is for insiders.)
The accessibility: hāka dētām dārīm — yētī javaḷī sāmōrīm — when (one) gives a hāka (= loud-call) at (the) door; — they come — close — sāmōrīm (face-to-face). Call out at the door — and they come right up, face-to-face. (= classical Hari-comes-when-called trope; cf. 1410's hāka Nārāyaṇā — Paṇḍharīcā rāṇā āikōna dhāvēla.)
The closing-claim: Śivēm — māgitalēm hātīm dyāvēm — by Śiva (Mahādeva) — what is asked — into (the) hand — must be given. Śiva must give what is asked, into the hand. The hand-to-hand delivery — direct, immediate. (Continues the Śiva-address* register.)
The ॥२॥ marker likely signals close of another sub-series (perhaps 1498-1499, two more abhangs to Mahādeva, alongside 1496-1497). So the Śiva-cluster may run 1496-1497 (sub-series 1) + 1498-1499 (sub-series 2) — four total Śiva-abhangs in this stretch.
