Abhanga 3571

Chanting God's name with full devotion is enough on its own, but pride and self-importance will keep God distant no matter how much you chant.

When you feel like your simple daily devotion is not enough compared to grand religious display.
When you keep repeating a spiritual practice but your mind stays full of pride and self-importance.
When you wonder why your devotion feels empty even though you never miss a day of it.

The verse

Literal translation

He chi sarvasukha japāvā Viṭhṭhalathis itself is sarva-sukha — japa Viṭhṭhala; na davaḍāvā paḷa kṣaṇa vāmyāmdon't let paḷa-kṣaṇa go in vain. What it means

A 4-verse canonical Name-supremacy text. Japa-of-Viṭhṭhal is sarva-sukha; don't-waste-a-moment; this-is-the-root of-all-sādhanas; Gōpāḷa is-reached by-this-path; no-need-of-tapas-or-tīrthas; (but) where kalpanā-and-deha-abhimāna sit, Nārāyaṇa-doesn't-come-near; those-who-block-Name from giving Deva-meeting — kuṣṭha appears on their lips.

For someone today

If you-have-Nāma, you-don't-need any other-sādhana. But you-must-clear kalpanā (imagination) and deha-abhimāna (body-conceit) — otherwise Nārāyaṇa stays-far.
