Abhanga 4558
Every stage of life, even the sweetest one, is part of a larger unfolding purpose and must eventually give way to what comes next.
The verse
ये दशे चरित्र केलें नारायणें । रांगतां गोधनें राखिताहे ॥१॥
हें सोंग सारिलें या रूपें अनंतें । पुढें हि बहु तें करणें आहे ॥२॥
आहे तुका म्हणे धर्म संस्थापणें । केला नारायणें अवतार ॥३॥
Literal translation
In-this-state-Nārāyaṇa-charitra-done — as-toddler-protected-godhana. This-sōmga-finished-in-this-rūpa-Anantā — much-more-ahead. Tukā: dharma-sansthāpana — avatāra-by-Nārāyaṇa.
What it means
A 3-verse bridge-transition — closing the Gokul-childhood-narrative and pointing-forward to the dharma-sansthāpana mission (Kamsa-vadha and-beyond). The toddler-Lord protected-godhana; this rūpa-is-finished; ahead is the establishing-dharma-mission — for which the avatāra was made. Pair with 4557 (preceding Gokul-end), 4559 (Mathurā-narrative-begins).
For someone today
God's childhood role in Gokul, protecting the cattle while still crawling as a toddler, was just one stage of his story, and Tukaram reminds us that stage is now complete. There is much more still to come, because the deeper purpose of this whole incarnation was always to restore dharma in the world. Every phase of life, even the sweetest one, eventually gives way to the next part of a larger purpose.
