Abhanga 102
English: Without the bhakta, where does the deity get the form-of-service?
The verse
Literal translation
English: Without the bhakta, where does the deity get the form-of-service? They beautify each other — like gold in one place and jewel (together making the ornament). Without the deity, who would give the bhakta niskama (desirelessness)? Tuka says: like child and mother — the net of affection.

| सोनें एके ठायीं हिरा | "gold in one place, jewel" (gold-setting and jewel together make ornament) |

| बाळ माता जैसें स्नेहजाळ | "as the child to mother — the net-of-affection" |
What it means
A mutual-need claim. The structural argument: deity-and-bhakta are not in a one-way dependency. The deity needs the bhakta to have someone to-be-served-by (otherwise the deity-form has no function). The bhakta needs the deity as the source of niskama (desirelessness — the state that lets bhakti operate). The gold-and-jewel image is precise: the gold-setting is incomplete without the jewel; the jewel without the setting. Together, they are the ornament. The mother-and-child image deepens it: the affection-net is between them, not in either alone. [T]
For someone today
This abhang corrects the common modern frame in which the seeker reaches up to the divine and the divine is imagined as already-complete-without-the-seeker. Tukaram's claim is more interesting: the relationship is mutual ornament. The deity has form because there are bhaktas to serve through that form. The bhakta has niskama because there is a deity to give it. Each is incomplete alone. The application: don't approach bhakti as a beggar; approach it as the missing-half of an ornament whose other-half is also incomplete without you.
Where this applies
- Forgetting relationship is mutual. Tukaram's reframe.
- Imagining bhakti as one-way. Deity needs the form-of-service.
- Gold-and-jewel image. Neither alone is ornament.
