Literal translation
English: The fire has come, Kānho — what should we do? We don't know — how shall we live with our jīva today? Run, Hari — we are caught in the joint / narrow place — in the middle of the vōṇavā — do some buddhi. Suddenly the flames seen above — turning to look, we were already back-turned. All around — the round — escape cannot pass when running. Tuka says: you know — do (it), Ananta.

What it means
A davāgni (forest-fire) abhang. The Bhāgavata leelā: Krishna and his comrades are caught in a forest-fire in Vraja; Krishna swallows the fire to save them. Tukaram tells the first half of the leelā — the trapped panic-voice — in this abhang; the swallowing-resolution comes in 205.
Five movements:
-
पैल आली आगी — the fire has come. Direct, urgent, opening-with-the-fact. No setup, no metaphor-introduction.
-
Kānho, what to do? — how shall we live today? The panic-question directed to Krishna. The first move is not running but asking the loved-one what to do.
-
सांपडलों संधी — वोणव्याचे मधीं — बुद्धि कांहीं करावी — caught in the sandhī — in the middle of the forest-fire — do some buddhi. The self-diagnosis: we are caught in a sandhī (joint / narrow place); we are in the middle of a vōṇavā. The request: (you) do some buddhi. The self-buddhi is exhausted; the request is for Krishna's buddhi.
-
अवचितां जाळ येतां देखियेला वरी — परतोनि पाहतां आधीं होतों पाठमोरी — suddenly flames seen above — turning to look, we were already back-turned. The time-collapse of crisis: by the time the bhakta turns to look, they are already in the wrong-position (back-turned, with the fire approaching from behind). Crisis arrives faster than orientation.
-
सभोंवता फेर — रीग न पुरे पळतां — all-around the round — escape cannot pass when running. The enclosure is total. The run does not produce escape. (Compare running as the standard escape-strategy: it doesn't work here.)
-
तुका म्हणे जाणसी तें करावें अनंता — Tuka says — you know — do (it), Ananta. The closing-entrustment. Ananta (the infinite-one) knows; do whatever is to be done. The bhakta's position: I have stopped trying; you know; you do.
The forest-fire is the standard bhakti-image for an unstoppable circumstance — economic ruin, terminal illness, social collapse, sudden bereavement — that cannot be escaped by running. The bhakta's entrustment-voice is the precise response. [T]
For someone today
This abhang names what-to-do-when-trapped. Five precise moves:
-
Open with the fact, not the metaphor. Pail ālī āgī. No setup. Name what is happening. The fire has come — direct, urgent.
-
Ask the loved-one what to do*, not just for help. Kānho kāya re karāvē. The first move is asking for instruction, not running away. (Notice: not Kānho save us; the bhakta is asking what to do*.)
-
Diagnose the sandhī*: caught-in-the-joint, fire-in-the-middle, my-buddhi-exhausted. Be precise. Self-buddhi exhausted is the diagnostic that triggers the request for the loved-one's buddhi*.
-
Recognize time-collapses-in-crisis*. Avachitā jāḷa, paratoni pāhātā āhīm hotom pāṭha-morī. By the time you orient, you are already in the wrong-position. Don't try to think your way out at normal-speed; the crisis is faster*.
-
Recognize running cannot escape* — and entrust. Sabhōvatā fērā, rīga na pure paḷatām. Running is the standard-strategy; here it doesn't work. The recognition is the prelude to the entrustment*.
-
Close with: you know — do, Ananta*. The closing-line is not a request for specific intervention; it is entrustment of the choice-of-intervention to the infinite-one. The bhakta has stopped specifying.
For today: when truly trapped — name the fire, ask for instruction, diagnose the sandhī, recognize the time-collapse, recognize running-cannot-escape, entrust the choice-of-intervention to the infinite-one. This is not passive resignation; it is post-self-buddhi entrustment.
Normal-speed ने think your way out प्रयत्न करू नका; crisis faster.
-
Where this applies
- Trapped in sandhī, fire-in-the-middle. Recognize honestly.
- Running cannot escape. Stop running.
- Ananta-jāṇasī-tē-karāvē. Entrust the choice-of-intervention.
