Abhanga 206

The one who rescues you draws strength from what you offered, however small, so the rescue was never one-sided and your contribution genuinely mattered.

When the bhakta's offering is what gives the deity strength — and you have to recognize this radical mutual-empowerment claim
When the no-burns-anywhere miracle astonishes — and you accept the deity's intactness through the rescue

The verse

Literal translation

To those who don't know, Hari shows the true bhāva — no shame; (he) dances, plays the pāva, sounds the mohari. Come, let us go take his feet — (he) saved (us) burning, from the great fire. How, Kānhobā, did you swallow such a fire? — we don't see (you) burned — not in mouth, not in body anywhere. Tuka says: why do you make wonder? — he eats our shidori, that came as strength to him.

What it means

The davāgni-aftermath abhang. After 204-205 (the trapped panic-voice and the cosmic-form swallowing the flames), 0206 names what comes next. Three movements:

  1. नेणती तयांसि साच भाव दावी हरी — लाज नाहीं नाचेto those who don't know, Hari shows true bhāva — no shame, dances. Post-rescue, Krishna displays his bhāva to those who did not previously know. The display is shameless dancing-and-playing — not solemn theological-disclosure. The post-miracle register is celebration, not exposition.

  2. चला रे याच्या पायां लागों आतां — राखिलें जळतां महा आगीपासूनिcome, let us take his feet — he saved us from the great fire. The bhakta-band's response is taking-the-feet — the warkari prostration-gesture. No analysis, no theology, no calculation — just take the feet.

  3. कैसी रे कान्होबा एवढी गिळियेली आगीhow, Kānhobā, did you swallow such a fire? The astonishment-voice. The bhaktas inspect Krishna's bodyno burns anywhere. The intactness through rescue is the diagnostic.

  4. आमची सिदोरी खातो त्याचें आलें बळhe eats our shidori — that came as strength to him. The radical mutual-empowerment claim. Tukaram answers the wonder: it was not Krishna's innate cosmic-power alone that swallowed the fire; it was the strength that came from eating the bhaktas' shidori. The bhaktas' offering empowered the rescue. The deity needs the bhakta's offering to perform the rescue. (Compare 180's (else) I came as a useless stone — the same mutual-dependence claim, here in the strength-flow form.)

For someone today

This abhang names the post-rescue register and a radical mutual-empowerment claim:

  1. Post-rescue is celebration, not exposition. Lāja nāhīm nāche, pāva vājavi mohari. When a real rescue has happened, the display is dance-and-play, not theological-explanation. Don't ask the rescuer to explain; let the rescuer dance.

  2. The first response is take-the-feet. Pāyām lāgōm ātām. No analysis. Take the feet. The gesture itself is the adequate first-response to a real rescue.

  3. Inspect for intactness — no burns anywhere. This is not skepticism; it is honest awe. How did you swallow it without harm? The intactness is part of the miracle and deserves to be noted.

  4. The bhakta's offering empowered the rescue. This is the radical claim. The deity does not rescue only by cosmic-power; the rescue is empowered by the bhakta's shidori. Two implications:

  5. Don't withhold your offering thinking the deity has unlimited cosmic-resources. The deity uses your offering — your service, your name-taking, your kīrtana, your time, your shidorito do the rescue.

  6. Don't credit the deity alone with the rescue. The bhakta's offering was part of it. The bhakta is not just receiver; the bhakta is a contributor to the strength that made the rescue possible.

For today: when a real-rescue has happened in your life — celebrate-not-explain, take-the-feet, note-the-intactness, and recognize that your offering was part of the strength that did the rescue. The deity's power and the bhakta's offering were both needed.
