Abhanga 358
When disgrace or humiliation hits, Tukaram doesn't blame others first — he asks God honestly why it happened, then looks inward and admits he missed something essential at the root of it. Once he sees that what happened has already happened, he refuses to waste more energy on regret; instead he turns the moment into a resolution: no more keeping company with people who lead him wrong. The embarrassment becomes the trigger for a real change in who he spends time with.
The verse
Literal translation
Why happened — O deva — such phajitī? At the root — I missed the varma — that's how it was in citta. What was to be — has been; vain khamtī now. Tuka says: enough now — durjana-company.

What it means
A phajitī-recognition and resolve abhang. May be a continuation of the persecution-aftermath reflection. Three claims:
-
The opening-question. Why did such disgrace come? The honest-question to the deva.
-
मुळीं वर्म नसतों चुकलों — तो मी ऐसें चित्तीं — at the root — I missed the varma — that's how it was in citta. The self-recognition: I missed the varma at the root — the secret-essence was missed. That was how it was in my citta. Phajitī came because varma was missed. (The varma-missing — failure of essential-attention — is the root-cause.)
-
होणार होऊनि गेलें — मिथ्या आतां खंती — what was to be has been — vain to lament now. The fait-accompli claim: what was destined / to-happen — has happened; now lament is vain. Don't waste energy on past-disgrace-regret.
-
The closing-resolve: enough of durjana-company. The forward-resolve — no more wicked-company. The phajitī's lesson is the resolve.

For someone today
When disgrace or humiliation hits, Tukaram doesn't blame others first — he asks God honestly why it happened, then looks inward and admits he missed something essential at the root of it. Once he sees that what happened has already happened, he refuses to waste more energy on regret; instead he turns the moment into a resolution: no more keeping company with people who lead him wrong. The embarrassment becomes the trigger for a real change in who he spends time with.
Where this applies
- Honest why to the deva. Not blame-others.
- Missed-varma at root. Self-diagnosis.
- Regret-now is vain. Don't burn fuel.
- Enough of durjana-company. Forward-resolve.
