Abhanga 381
When a divine presence overwhelms you completely, ordinary errands and the mind's anxious calculations simply fall away, leaving only stunned, enveloping love.
The verse
Literal translation
I have forgotten the path home — came to the hāṭa to sell gōrasa. Kānhā re — manmōhana lāla — seeing Gopāla, I forgot all. Where shall I put the foot, see ahead? I see — His vōhina all around. I am stunned, Tuka — all the dhōkā of the mana has fled.

What it means
A gōpī-Hindi-vrajāvalī abhang. This abhang is in Hindi/Vraja-bhāṣā register — Tukaram writing in the Northern bhakti-koiné (the language of Sūr, Mīrā, and the Krishna-bhakti tradition). Three claims:
-
मैं भुली घरजानी बाट — गोरस बेचन आयें हाट — I forgot the path home — came to the hāṭa to sell gōrasa. The opening-image: the gōpī-bhakta came to the hāṭa (market) to sell gōrasa (milk-curds, dairy products, the gōpī's wares); but forgot the path-home. The worldly-mission abandoned upon Krishna-darśana.
-
कान्हा रे मनमोहन लाल — सब ही बिसरूं देखें गोपाल — Kānhā re manmōhana lāla — seeing Gopāla, I forgot all. The forgetting-claim: Kānhā (Krishna), the mind-stealer beloved (manmōhana lāla) — upondarśana, all is forgotten. Krishna is the manmōhana — themind-stealing-beloved.
-
काहां पग डारूं देख आनेरा — देखें तों सब वोहिन घेरा — where shall I put the foot — see ahead — I see, all around, His circle. The enveloping-vision: I look ahead to put my foot — but I see His vōhina (circle / surrounding-presence) everywhere. No-place-to-step that is not Him. (Compare Bhāgavata's Krishna-pervading-Vraja.)
-
हुं तों थकित भैर तुका — भागा रे सब मनका धोका — I am stunned, Tuka — all the dhōkā of the mana has fled. The closing-clearance: I amthakita(stunned, frozen); all thedhōkā(deception, danger, illusion) of themanahas fled. The mind's deceptions clear in the enveloping Krishna-darśana.

For someone today
Sometimes you set out to do something entirely ordinary — an errand, a task, a plan — and something bigger interrupts it so completely that you forget where you were even headed. That is what happens here: a woman going to market to sell milk and curds sees Krishna, the beloved who steals the mind, and every worldly concern falls away. Wherever she looks to take her next step, she finds Him surrounding her on every side, until she is left stunned and still. In that overwhelmed stillness, every fear and anxious calculation her mind was carrying simply flees.
Where this applies
- Worldly-mission interrupted by darśana. Let it.
- Krishna is manmōhana-lāla. Mind-stealer-beloved.
- His vōhina surrounds. Enveloping.
- Mana'sdhōkā flees. Clearance.
