Abhanga 384
When mind-born pain cannot be reasoned away, only the Divine's presence can restore you, and its arrival cannot be scheduled or proven to anyone but yourself.
The verse
Literal translation
Manō-jamnya-vyathā — vēdha into the inside — bring quickly Nanda's kumara. Sāmvaḷī-prabhā arose in the anga — truly this avasthā — known to me from my kṣōbha. Suddenly — the sākṣī is one's own citta — whenever bhāgya rises, I don't know. All vōsāūna — only the caraṇa remain. Tuka says: with darśana — jīvana came.

What it means
A viraha-cured-by-darśana abhang. Continues the Krishna-bhakti viraha cluster (cf. 381-383). Four claims:
-
The opening-pain: manō-jamnya-vyathā (mind-born pain) — thevēdha(piercing) has gone into the inside; bring quicklyNanda'skumara(Krishna). Mind-born-pain only Krishna can cure.
-
उमटली अंगीं वो सांवळी प्रभा — साच हे अवस्था कळे मज माझ्या क्षोभा — sāmvaḷī-prabhā arose in the anga — truly this avasthā known to me from my kṣōbha. The darśana-experience: sāmvaḷī-prabhā (dark-luster, the dark-blue glow of Krishna) arose in my body; truly this avasthā I know from my own kṣōbha (turbulence). The bhakta's-experience of Krishna's-luster-arising-in-the-body.
-
एकाएकीं साक्षी येथें आपुलें चित्त — कोण्या काळें होइल नेणों भाग्य उदित — suddenly the sākṣī is one's own citta — whenever bhāgya rises, I don't know. The witness-claim: suddenly, my own citta is the sākṣī (witness) of this; I don't know whenbhāgya(fortune) rises. The bhāgya-uday is sudden, unannounced.
-
अवघें वोसाऊन उरले ते चरण — तुका म्हणे दर्शनापें आलें जीवन — all withered — only the caraṇa remain — Tuka says: with darśana, life came. The closing-restoration: allvōsāūna(withered, dried-up) — only Hiscaraṇa(feet) remain; with thedarśana—jīvana(life) came. Darśana = restoration of life when manō-vyathā had reduced everything to withering.

For someone today
Some pain is born in the mind itself, not from outer circumstances, and no amount of thinking your way through it can fix it — only the Divine's presence can. When that presence begins to touch you, you may feel it as something almost physical, a glow or warmth rising through your body, confirming that what you're going through is real. In that moment you don't need anyone else to validate the experience; your own awareness becomes proof enough. You can't schedule or predict when this grace will arrive, but when it does, everything else you had been clinging to falls away, and the essential connection that remains brings you back to life.
Where this applies
- Manō-jamnya-vyathā — call for Krishna. Mind-born-pain.
- Sāmvaḷī-prabhā in the body. Felt-darśana sign.
- One's citta is the sākṣī. No external witness.
- All withers; only feet remain; darśana brings life. Restoration.
