Abhanga 540
Someone still identified with body and self-interest needs honest conduct as provisions for the road, and dharma is the shade that a person scorched by life's heat genuinely needs, not something to look down on.
The verse
Literal translation
Deha-buddhi — lōbha in citta — āpulē-parāvē distinguish. For them — walking — sidōrī needed — duḥkha — asatya. Tuka says: dharma — rakṣā — chāyā — uṇha tāpalā wishes.

What it means
A deha-buddhi-needs-provisions-dharma-as-shade abhang. Companion to 0539: 0539 described the saint's-state-of-no-second; 0540 describes the opposite-state of those-with-deha-buddhi-and-lōbha and the dharma-they-need. Three claims:
-
The opening-description: those in whosecittadwellsdeha-buddhi(body-identification) andlōbha(greed); theyjāṇatī(recognize, distinguish)āpulē(own) andparāvē(other). Body-identifiers-distinguish-own-and-other.
-
तयासि चालतां पाहिजे सिदोरी — दुःख पावे करी असत्य तो — for them — walking — sidōrī needed — duḥkha — asatya. The provision-and-truth-claim: for them —cālatām(walking, traveling) —sidōrī(provisions, packed-food) is needed; one who makesasatya(untruth) —duḥkha pāvē(will suffer). Body-identifiers-need-rules: provisions-for-the-journey, truth-or-suffering. Bhakti-practice-for-the-non-saint-still-requires-rules.
-
The closing-image: Tuka says: to protectdharma; thechāyā(shade, shadow) is wished (icchī) by the onetāpalā(heated, scorched) by theuṇha(sun). Dharma-is-the-shade-wished-by-the-heated. Those who are sun-scorched (= those-suffering-the-heat-of-samsāra) wish-for-the-shade-of-dharma.

For someone today
Most of us still identify strongly with our bodies and our own interests, so we naturally sort the world into what's mine and what's not mine. That's fine, but Tukaram says such a person still needs provisions for the road: honest living, because lying and cheating bring real suffering. Dharma, living by right conduct and practice, isn't just a rulebook for people who haven't reached some higher state; it's the shade that someone scorched by the heat of ordinary struggle actually longs for and needs. Tukaram doesn't look down on the person who still needs that shelter; he describes them with compassion, not contempt.
