Abhanga 680

This abhang makes a bold claim: someone could visit millions of holy places and still have wasted their life if they never truly saw Pandharpur, never stood before Vitthal's equally-placed feet. All the endless rituals and yogic disciplines in the world count for nothing if that one vision is missing. But turn it around, Tukaram says, and it becomes a promise: standing at Vitthal's feet, you have already reached every pilgrimage there is, all at once. Don't chase countless destinations searching for what's already waiting for you in one place, in one true encounter with the divine.

What it means

A kōṭi-tīrtha-without-Pandharī-yōga-yāga-without-sama-caraṇa-Viṭṭhal-feet-tīrthas abhang. Pandharī-supremacy register. Three claims:

1. तीर्थें कोटी — पंढरी न देखली — जळो ज्यालेंपण — सम-चरण न देखे. Pandharī-priority-over-tīrtha-claim. (One who) madetīrthasin thekōṭi-many; but didn't seePandharī; let hisjyālēmpaṇa(living-itself) burn; (one) who hasn't-seen thesama-caraṇa(the equal-feet, the Pandharī-pose with feet equally-placed) (= the veryjyālēmpaṇa-life-itself is wasted). Tīrtha-without-Pandharī-is-wasted-life. (This is sharp: the kōṭi-tīrthas are nothing without Pandharī's-darśana.)

2. योग-याग अनंत — सम-चरण न देखले. Yōga-yāga-without-sama-caraṇa-claim. Yōga-yāga (the standard karma-kāṇḍa and yōga-sādhana) endless done;but didn't see the sama-caraṇa. Yōga-yāga-without-sama-caraṇa-is-wasted. (Same logic applied to the yōga-yāga-path: without Pandharī's-darśana, all the yōga-yāga is hollow.)

3. विठ्ठल-पायीं अनंत तीर्थें घडलीं. Viṭṭhal-feet-as-tīrtha-aggregate-claim. At Viṭṭhal'spāyā (feet) — endless tīrthas have-formed-themselves.Viṭṭhal's-feet-themselves-are-the-aggregate-of-all-tīrthas. (The reverse-image: where Pandharī-feet are, alltīrthasgather; thus seeing the feetis visiting all-tīrthas-at-once.)
