Abhanga 754

Even when a devotee complains or quarrels out of habit, the underlying sense of oneness with God survives the friction and remains.

When santas are my support; You alone nirvikāra — and you have to recognize this register
When don't quarrel with us; we have the habit of fighting — and you accept this image
When aikya-bhāva remains in remainder — and you receive this final image

What it means

A santas-my-ādhāra-You-alone-nirvikāra-don't-quarrel-with-us-our-habit-aikya-bhāva-remains abhang. Santas-and-aikya-bhāva register. Three claims:

Santas-my-support-don't-quarrel-claim. To me, thesantasare theādhāra(support); You alone arenirvikāra(changeless); consider,deva; don't have adāvā(quarrel, dispute, lawsuit) with us. I-have-santas-as-support; You-alone-changeless; don't-quarrel-with-us.

You-can't-quarrel-back-claim. You can'tbōlabōlavē(speak-back, contend); we have thesavē(habit) ofbhāṇḍāyā(quarrelling, brawling). So-don't-take-our-bhāṇḍa as quarrel — but as bhakta-banter, the bhakta's contentious-affectionate-style.)

Aikya-bhāva-remains-claim. Tuka says: even-then —aikya-bhāva(the oneness-bhāva, the unity-feeling) urē urī (remains in the remainder, the residue).Even-after-our-quarrelling-the-aikya-bhāva-still-remains.

For someone today

Tukārām tells God plainly: the santas are what steady me, You alone never change, so please do not turn this into a fight between us. He admits that he and other devotees have the habit of quarreling and complaining, even toward God, while God himself never answers back in kind. But underneath that friction, he says, the sense of oneness between devotee and God never actually breaks. It survives the complaining, the venting, and the rough edges of a real, honest relationship.
