Outward religious performance without real inner change is just a costume, and honest self-examination can reveal when devotion hasn't actually transformed you.
The verse
बळें बाह्यात्कारें संपादिलें सोंग । नाहीं जाला त्याग अंतरींचा ॥१॥ ऐसें येतें नित्य माझ्या अनुभवा । मनासी हा ठावा समाचार ॥ध्रु.॥ जागृतीचा नाहीं अनुभव स्वप्नीं । जातों विसरुनि सकळ हें ॥२॥ प्रपंचाबाहेरि नाहीं आलें चत्ति । केले करी नित्य वेवसाय ॥३॥ तुका म्हणे मज भोरप्या चि परी । जालें सोंग वरी आंत तैसें ॥४॥

What it means
A forcefully-outward-sōnga-no-antara-tyāga-jāgṛti-not-felt-in-svapna-citta-not-outside-samsāra-daily-vēvasāya-bhōrapyā-impostor-sōnga-on-top-inside-same abhang. Bhōrapyā-self-confession register. Four claims:

बळें-बाह्यात्कारें-सोंग — अंतरींचा-त्याग-नाहीं — रोजच्या-अनुभवा-त-येतं — मनाला-समाचार. Forcefully-outward-sōnga-no-antara-tyāga-claim. Forcefully (baḷē), outwardly (bāhyāt-kāre), thesōnga(disguise — the bhakta-costume) wassampādilē; but thetyāgaofantarahasn't happened; this comes-into myanubhavadaily; themanaknows thissamācāra. Bhakta-costume-on-but-no-inner-tyāga; I-know-this-daily.

जागृति-अनुभव-स्वप्नीं-नाहीं — सकळ-विसरुनि. Jāgṛti-not-felt-in-svapna-claim. Theanubhavaofjāgṛti(waking-state) is not (felt) insvapna(dream-state); I go-forgetting all-this. In-dream-I-forget-all-the-jāgṛti-anubhava. (Painful self-knowledge: even the bhakti-anubhava of jāgṛti doesn't carry-into the dream — proving it isn't deep.)

This abhang names the pattern of an impostor's self-confession:

What is felt in waking life does not carry over into dreams. It does not carry into dreams.

The mind still remains inside worldly life, carrying on its daily business. Still caught in worldly life.

For today: forcefully, only on the outside, this disguise was put on; no real inner renunciation has actually happened; this comes to me daily in my own experience, and my mind knows it well; what is felt in waking life does not carry over into dreams — I go about forgetting all of it; the mind has not stepped outside worldly life, still carrying on its daily business; I am just like a costumed actor — the disguise sits on top, while inside I remain exactly the same.
This abhang is one of Tukaram's most bracing pieces of self-examination. Compare 0844, where a similar image of the many-costumed actor appears in a petition to the helmsman guiding one through the world — the same self-image of a performer wearing many forms, but here it is worked out through the confession that the outward disguise hides an unchanged inside. "The disguise on top, but inside exactly the same" is the precise, unflinching confession of an impostor.

तुकारामांच्या सर्वात परखड आत्मपरीक्षणांपैकी ही एक ओवी आहे. ओवी क्र. ०८४४ शी तुलना करता येईल — तिथेही अनेक सोंगे घेणाऱ्या नटाची अशीच प्रतिमा आहे, जगातून मार्ग दाखवणाऱ्या सुकाणूला केलेल्या विनवणीच्या रूपात — अनेक रूपे घेणाऱ्या कलाकाराची तीच आत्मप्रतिमा, पण इथे ती बाहेरचे सोंग आतला अपरिवर्तित माणूस लपवते या कबुलीतून मांडली आहे. "वरून सोंग, आतून तसाच" हीच ढोंगीपणाची नेमकी, निर्भीड कबुली आहे.
