Abhanga 885

Giving yourself fully at every step turns distraction into empty talk, and even while still in this mortal body you can taste an expansive, joyful, liberated state.

When at each step the body was given; the kāraṇa was whole — and you have to recognize this register
When I have plugged up my place; for the jagat, all (else) is empty-talk — and you accept this image
When the mind goes onward; deha grows in santōṣa — and you allow this image

What it means

A at-each-step-gave-body-whole-kāraṇa-plugged-up-place-jagat-all-empty-talk-mind-goes-onward-deha-grows-santōṣa-in-the-kṣara-bhāga-became-pervading-in-jagat abhang. Attained-state-claim register. Three claims:

Body-given-place-occupied-claim. At each step, I gave theanga; thekāraṇabecamesānga (whole);I have rudhavūni ṭhēlōm (plugged-up, steadfastly-occupied) (my) ṭhāva; for thejagat, all (else) isvāva. At-every-step-gave-body; place-fully-occupied; world-is-empty-talk-now.

Mind-onward-deha-grows-santōṣa-claim. Themanā-lāhō(the running-of-the-mind) goes onward; thedēhagrows insantōṣa. Mind-runs-onward; body-grows-in-bliss.

In-kṣara-share-became-pervading-claim. Tuka says: in the kṣara-bhāga (in the perishable-share — i.e., still-in-the-mortal-body)I have become vyāpaka (pervading) in the jagat. In-the-mortal-share-became-cosmically-pervading. (Profound attained-state claim: while-still-in-the-perishable-body, become vyāpaka in the jagat. Living-Brahman / jīvanmukti statement.)

For someone today

Tukaram describes a state reached by giving himself completely at every single step, so fully that the world's usual distractions now feel like empty talk. His mind moves forward freely, and his body fills with contentment. Remarkably, he says that even while still living in this perishable body, he has become as vast and pervasive as the whole world itself — a taste of liberation while still alive, not something reserved for after death.
