Teaching only takes root in you when your mind is steady and pure and you truly trust the words of the saints, the way a seed needs soil to sprout.
The verse
उचित जाणावें मुख्य धर्म आधीं । चित्तशुद्ध बुद्धी ठायीं स्थिर ॥१॥ न घलावी धांव मनाचिये ओढी । वचन आवडी संताचिये ॥२॥ अंतरीं या राहे वचनाचा विश्वास । न उगे उपदेश तुका म्हणे ॥३॥
Literal translation
Ucita — mukhya dharma — first. Citta-śuddha — buddhi — steady. Mana-ōḍhī — don't-run. Vacana — āvaḍī — santa. Antara — vacana-viśvāsa — stays. Not — ugē — upadeśa — Tuka says.

For someone today
Before you chase after any teaching, get the basics right first: know what truly matters, keep your mind clear, and hold your intellect steady rather than tossed around. Don't run wherever your restless mind pulls you; instead, cultivate a real love for the words of the saints. Tukaram says that teaching only takes root when you carry a living trust in those words inside you, the way a seed needs soil before it can sprout. Without that trust, no amount of instruction will actually grow in you.
मराठी: कोणतीही शिकवण स्वीकारण्याआधी आधी मूळ गोष्टी नीट समजून घ्या, काय खरोखर महत्त्वाचं आहे ते ओळखा, मन शुद्ध ठेवा आणि बुद्धी स्थिर ठेवा, इकडे-तिकडे भरकटू देऊ नका. मनाची ओढ जिकडे नेईल तिकडे धावत सुटू नका, त्याऐवजी संतांच्या वचनावर खरी आवड बाळगा. तुकाराम म्हणतात की उपदेश तेव्हाच रुजतो जेव्हा त्या वचनावरचा विश्वास आतून जिवंत असतो, जसं बी रुजायला आधी मातीची गरज असते. तो विश्वास नसेल तर कितीही उपदेश दिला तरी तो प्रत्यक्षात अंगी उतरत नाही.
