Abhanga 963

Trusting God will not abandon him, Tuka still asks why help is delayed and why he must keep begging for something that costs an already complete God nothing to give.

When You won't forsake — this is my confidence — and you have to recognize this register
When You know me as adhīra; why put my uplift at a distance? — and you accept this image
When drive away the petty-things; it's not right to be loosened — and you allow this image

The verse

What it means

A You-won't-truly-forsake-You-know-me-impatient-why-put-uplift-at-distance-drive-away-petty-it's-not-right-to-be-loosened-why-must-I-keep-beseeching-You-are-sa-bhāgya-what-of-mine-comes-to-You abhang. Don't-make-me-keep-beseeching register. Three claims:

Don't-put-uplift-at-distance-claim. You won'tupēkṣāla;this is the bharavasā; You know me asadhīra; whylāmbaṇī uddhāra? — drive away the kara-kara.

Why-must-I-beseech-claim. Clearly known I shouldn't besuṭōm; why must I keepāḷavuni again?

What-of-mine-comes-to-You-claim. Tuka says: You aresa-bhāgya, Dēva;what kēvā of mine has come to You?You're-fortunate-already-what-could-I-add-or-take?. (Subtle: You're alreadysa-bhāgya(full-of-fortune) — what could my-turning-toward-You possiblyadd to You? — yet why withhold?)

For someone today

Tukaram admits he trusts, deep down, that God will not really abandon him, but that very trust makes his impatience sharper: why delay the help he needs? He asks God to sweep away the daily friction and irritation and simply act. He already knows he should not be left to drift on his own, so why must he keep begging over and over? In a striking closing line, Tuka points out that God is already complete and fortunate, so nothing he offers in devotion truly adds anything, which makes the delay even harder to understand.
