Abhanga 1013

Ask God plainly to burn your pride, give you equal vision of everyone, humble you before the saints, and keep him always in your heart, then trust him to save you however he will.

What it means

A just-do-this-much-Dēva-listen-burn-my-pride-with-roots-let-me-see-all-with-equal-vision-seeing-you-let-me-bow-to-saints-foot-dust-Pandharī-nāth-in-heart-day-and-night-save-by-whatever-bhāva-now-come-to-your-refuge abhang. Now-come-to-your-refuge register. Tukaram's fivefold itulē karī Dēvā (just-do-this-much) petition. Each line begins with the same anaphoric refrain. Five claims:

1. इतुलें-करीं — समूळ-अभिमान-जाळीं. Burn-pride-with-roots-claim. 'Just do this much, Dēva, listen to thisvacana: burn myabhimānasamūḷa (with-the-roots, root-and-all).

2. इतुलें-करीं — सम-दृष्टी-तुज-देखें. Equal-vision-seeing-you-claim. 'Just do this much, Dēva, listen to thisgōṣṭi: let me see all withsama-drṣṭi (equal-vision), seeing you (in all).

3. इतुलें-करीं — संत-चरण-रज-वंदीं. Bow-to-saints-foot-dust-claim. 'Just do this much, Dēva — I petition you: let mevandīm (bow to / venerate) the samta-caraṇa-raja (foot-dust of samtas) with (my) māthā.

4. इतुलें-करीं — Pandharī-nātha-हृदयीं-रात्र-दिवस. Pandharī-nāth-in-heart-day-and-night-claim. 'Just do this much, Dēva, listen to thismāta: (let)Pandharī-nātha be in (my) hrdaya divasa-rātrīm (day-and-night).

5. भलतिया-भावें — Tuka: शरण-आलों. Save-by-whatever-bhāva-now-come-to-refuge-claim. Save me by whatever-bhāva (any-quality, by-any-means); Tuka says:now (I) have come to (your) śaraṇa (refuge). (However-you-want, save me; I'm at the refuge.)

For someone today

This is Tukaram's fivefold request to God, each one beginning with the same plea: just do this much for me. First, burn away his pride completely, roots and all. Second, let him see everyone with equal eyes, recognizing God in all of them. Third, let him bow his head to the dust of the saints' feet. Fourth, let Pandharinath stay in his heart every day and every night without fail. Finally, he asks to be saved in whatever way God chooses, and simply declares that he has now come for refuge.
