Abhanga 1077

While playing this game, I lost my blanket — the one thing that covered and protected me. So I grabbed Kanhoba by the collar and demanded he account for it and give it back. Now I stand exposed, naked before everyone, with nothing left to hide behind. Tuka says his understanding is still raw and immature — it hasn't yet settled into its rightful place.

The verse

खेळों लागलों सुरकवडी । माझी घोंगडी हारपली ॥१॥ कान्होबाचे पडिलों गळां । घेई गोपाळा देई झाडा ॥ध्रु.॥ मी तों हागे उघडा जालों । अवघ्या आलों बाहेरी ॥२॥ तुका म्हणे बुद्धि काची । नाहीं ठायींची मजपाशीं ॥३॥

Literal translation

Sura-kavaḍī — ghōngaḍī hārapalī. Kānhōbā — gaḷā — jhāḍā. Ughaḍā — bāhērī. Tuka says: buddhi kācī — ṭhāyīñcī.

What it means

Ghōngaḍyācē abhanga 3. The sura-kavaḍī game (children's hide-and-seek). Four claims:

सुर-कवडी — घोंगडी-हारपली. Blanket-lost-claim. I started playingsura-kavaḍī;my ghōngaḍī was hārapalī. (In the play, the blanket got lost.)
Kānhōbा-गळ — झाडा-देई. Give-account-claim. I fell on Kānhōbā'sgaḷā;gōpāḷā, take, give jhāḍā (shake-out, give-account, hand-back). (I caught Krishna by the throat:give it back, account for it!)
उघडा — बाहेरी. Naked-exposed-claim. I have becomeughaḍā (exposed, naked); came out of everythingbāhērī (outside).
Tuka: बुद्धि-काची — ठायीं-नाहीं. Buddhi-immature-claim. Tuka says: buddhi iskācī (raw, immature, not-fully-cooked); not at-its-ṭhāyīñcīwith me.
