Abhanga 1194

When you churn milk, you get a precious ball of butter — the essence, the whole point of the effort. Throw that ball away, and there's no going back to reclaim it; it's gone for good. Tukārām uses this image for human birth itself: it is the churned essence of countless efforts, and if you waste it without using it for what truly matters, you cannot simply turn around and get it back. This is a call to take your life seriously right now, because some opportunities do not come twice.

The verse

मथीया गोला डारदिया तो । नहिं मिले फेरन ताक ॥१॥

Literal translation

Mathīyā gōlā ḍāra-diyā — nahim milē phēran-tāka.

मराठी: मथून (काढलेला) गोळा (= सार) टाकून दिलास तर — परत फिरून मिळणें नाहीं.

What it means

Sākhyā 27 of 30 — missed-opportunity image. Once you've thrown away the mathīyā gōlā (the churned ball — the very kernel, the essence) — there is no chance to phēr (turn back) and find it. The human birth (manuṣya-janma) is the churned essence; throw it away unused, no second chance.
