Abhanga 1361

Because everyone shares one root and source, the line between yours and mine is not real, and wherever a devoted person stands, that place belongs to God too.

When the bhakta declares his stake — we're not made of today-tomorrow half-baked stuff; yours-and-ours aren't divided; wherever I am, I appear as yours

The verse

Literal translation

We are not (made of) ājikālīcīm — kācī-kucī cāḷavaṇī. In one place — root and branch — you are the ṭhāva of all. Yours-and-ours — anything — bhinna is not divided. Tuka says: wherever I am — there I appear as-yours.

What it means

Bhakta-substance-assertion abhang. The opening: navhōm āmhī ājikālīcīm — kācīm kucīm cāḷavaṇīwe arenot(made) ofājikālī-cīm(= today-and-tomorrow / fly-by-night / fleeting) — (not)kācī-kucī(raw-and-half-baked)cāḷavaṇī(shifting / vacillating). The bhakta declares: I'm not the latest fad; I'm not the half-baked seeker; I'm not the swayed-by-this-or-that.

The grounding: ēkē ṭhāyīm mūḷa-ḍāḷa — ṭhāvā sakaḷa āhēsīin one place —mūḷa(root) andḍāḷa(= branch) — you are theṭhāva(place) of all. Hari is the single source and single growth; the place of all things.

Tumacē āmacē-sē kāmhīm — bhinna nāhīm vāṇṭalēmyours-and-ours — anything — has not beenbhinna-vāṇṭalēm(separately divided). The yours-mine distinction is not made between bhakta and Hari. (= Whatever I claim as "mine" is also yours; whatever you have is also "mine".)

The closing identity-statement: jēthē asēm — tēthē disēm tumacā-sāwherever I am — there I appearas-yours. Wherever the bhakta exists, that place displays him as Hari's. Identity by belonging.
