Abhanga 2164

True worship means giving your whole life and attention, not forced or half-hearted service, because what you truly invest is exactly what returns to you.

The verse

Literal translation

What it means

Pūjā-by-spending-jīva + fruit-like-seed abhang.

The opening — pūjā-by-jīva: vēchāvē tē jīvē — pūjā ghaḍē aiśā nāvē — what's to be spent — with jīva — by such a name, pūjā happens. Vēchaṇē = to spend, to expend. What's-to-be-spent is the-jīva; by-this-name (= when-jīva-is-the-currency), real-pūjā-happens.

The forced-labor distinction: bigārīcī tē bigārī — sākṣī antarīñchā Harī — forced-labor is forced-labor — Hari-within is the witness. Bigārī = unpaid/forced labor. What's-done-as-bigārī (forced-labor) remains-bigārī; Hari-within witnesses-the-difference. (= unwilling-service isn't pūjā; the inner-Hari knows.)

The fruit-and-seed law: phaḷa bījā'aiśē — kārya-kāraṇāsariśē — fruit like seed — cause-and-effect-together. The fruit-is-like-the-seed; cause and effect are-of-a-piece. (= what-you-sow is-what-you-reap.)

The closing — salt-like-salt: Tukā mhaṇē māna — lavaṇāsārikhē lavaṇa — Tuka says: measure — salt-like-salt. Measure — salt-is-like-salt. (= measure-for-measure; like-for-like.)

The core ethical-claim: pūjā requires spending-the-jīva (full investment), not bigārī (forced-labor); the-fruit (response-of-the-Lord) will-be in-the-measure of-the-seed (the-bhakta's-investment) — salt-for-salt, like-for-like.
