Abhanga 2450
A love so complete that it fills the eyes and heart makes everything else in ordinary life feel less sweet by comparison.
The verse
Literal translation
Dark beautiful form, chitta-thief — stands on Pandharī's brick. Eyes' fill doesn't suffice — my mind yearns for it. Nothing else sweet in samsāra — your feet remain in the inner-being. Prāṇa wants to leave the body — without seeing the śrī-mukha. Chitta enchanted by Nanda's-son — Tuka says: by this Garuḍa-bannered.
What it means
THE DARK-BEAUTIFUL-CHITTA-THIEF-ON-THE-BRICK ABHANG. One of Tukārām's most-celebrated darśana-images.
THE OPENING: sāmvaḷē rūpaḍē chōraṭē chittāchē — ubhē Paṇḍharīchē viṭēvarī — dark beautiful form, chitta-thief — stands on Pandharī's brick. Sāmvaḷē = dark-complexioned. Rūpaḍē = little-form, sweet-form. Chōraṭē chittāchē = thief of the chitta (mind-heart). Viṭēvarī = on the brick. Dark, beautiful-little-form, the chitta-thief — stands on-Pandharī's-brick. A celebrated darśana-description: the Viṭhṭhal-image as both dark-and-thief-of-hearts.
The yearning: ḍōḷiyāñchī dhaṇī pāhātām na purē — tayā lāgīm jhurē mana mājhē — eyes' fill doesn't suffice — my mind yearns. Eyes-can't-be-satisfied; mind-yearns.
The prāṇa-departure: prāṇa righōm pāhē kuḍī hē sāṇḍunī — śrī-mukha nayanīm na dēkhatām — prāṇa wants to leave the body — without seeing śrī-mukha. Without-seeing-the-śrī-mukha (sacred-face), the prāṇa wants-to-leave-the-body.
