Literal translation
Brahmayāñce veda Śankhāsure nele — the Brahma's Vedas were taken by Śankhāsura; tyāsāṭīm dharile matsya-rūpa — for that, (you) held the matsya-rūpa. Teṇe ātmā navhatā nelā brahmāṇḍāsī — he had not taken the ātmā of the brahmāṇḍa; kāya brahmayāsī navhate jñāna — did Brahmā not have jñāna. Parī teṇe dhāvā kelā āvaḍīne — but he made a dhāva (cry) with āvaḍī; jāle Nārāyaṇa krpā-sindhu — Nārāyaṇa became krpā-sindhu. Tukā mhaṇe Viṭhōbā mī nāma-dhāraka — Tukā says: Viṭhōbā, I am nāma-dhāraka; pōsanē sevaka bhēṭī deī — to (your) pōsanā-sevaka, give bhēṭī.
What it means
★ A canonical opening-text to the systematic Daśāvatāra-meditation cluster (3078-3087+). This-verse-treats Matsya-avatāra.
The teaching is striking: (Brahmā's) Vedas were taken; Matsya-rūpa was-taken-to-recover-them. But-Brahmā-could-have-known-the-Vedas-by-his-own-jñāna; the point-of-Matsya-rescue is not the-Vedas-themselves but-the-fact-that-Brahmā made-a-dhāva (cry) with-āvaḍī, and-Nārāyaṇa-became-krpā-sindhu.
★ The lesson is profound: the-avatāra-was-not-needed-because-the-bhakta-couldn't-do-it; the-avatāra-came-because-the-bhakta-cried-with-love. This-reframes-the-avatāra-as-bhakti-response, not-jñāna-substitute.
Closing-petition: I-am-Viṭhōbā's-nāma-dhāraka (Name-bearer); give-bheṭī-to-this-pōsanā-servant. The bhakta-applies-the-Matsya-principle: just-as-Brahmā-cried-and-was-answered, may-I-cry-and-be-answered.
Compare-Tukārām's 3044 (12-verse avatāra-stotra).
For someone today
Tukārām's Matsya-avatāra meditation. The Brahmā's Vedas were taken by Śankhāsura; for that, (you) held the matsya-rūpa. (Śankhāsura) had not taken the ātmā of the brahmāṇḍa — did Brahmā not have jñāna? But (when Brahmā) made a dhāva with fondness — Nārāyaṇa became the compassion-ocean. Viṭhōbā, I am the Name-bearer; to (your) cherished servant — give bhēṭī. The verse permits the avatāra-as-bhakti-response-not-jñāna-substitute reading.
