Whatever traditional practice feels out of reach, bhakti always offers an accessible substitute: the Name in place of scripture, the company of sants in place of yoga, and stories of Krishna in place of high philosophy.
The verse
Literal translation
V1: Māyā-jāḷa breaks, bhava-sindhu shatters — if fondness arises for Hari-nāma V2 (dhrva): Doing other karma-dharma in this Kali — who has crossed by it? V3: Can't recite Veda, no śāstra-bōdha — make pāṭha of Name-prabandha V4: Can't do yoga, can't do vairāgya — earn bhakti-bhāgya by sant-sanga V5: No anuṣṭhāna, no brahma-jñāna — make Krṣṇa-kathā (the) sopāna V6 (closing): Sants showed the varma — no other viśrāntī beyond
What it means
A canonical 5-verse bhakti-democratization-by-alternatives text by Tukārām.
The structural-method: for-each-difficulty pair-an-accessible-substitute: - Can't-recite-Veda? → recite-Name-prabandha - Can't-do-yoga-or-vairāgya? → sant-sanga - No-anuṣṭhāna-or-brahma-jñāna? → Krṣṇa-kathā-as-sopāna (ladder)
This is one-of-the-most-democratic Vārkarī-foundational-texts. Every-traditional-difficulty has-an-accessible-bhakti-alternative. The Name, the-sant-sanga, the-Krṣṇa-kathā — these-are the-accessible-paths.
The opening-claim: māyā-jāḷa-breaks, bhava-sindhu-shatters by-Hari-nāma-fondness. The closing-summary: sants-showed-the-varma; no-other-viśrāntī.
Compare-Tukārām's-own 2448 (Nāma-sankīrtana-sopa — THE most-famous Name-sankīrtana abhang), 2657 (canonical-yoga-vs-bhakti), 3054 (brahma-jñāna-hard, serve-sant-pāya).
For someone today
Tukārām's canonical teaching that opens bhakti to everyone. The net of māyā breaks, the ocean of worldly existence shatters — if one grows fond of the Name of Hari. Doing other karma and dharma in this Kali age — who has actually crossed over by it? Tell me. Cannot recite the Veda, have no grounding in the śāstras — then recite the Name's own compositions instead. Cannot do yoga, cannot practice vairāgya — then earn the fortune of bhakti through the company of sants. Have no formal discipline, don't know brahma-jñāna — then make the stories of Kṛṣṇa your ladder. The sants have shown this secret — beyond it, there is no other rest. The verse allows this democratizing teaching: for every difficulty, there is an accessible substitute in the Name or in the company of sants.
Where this applies
- When you feel you lack the education or training to pursue a spiritual path seriously
- When formal meditation or renunciation practices feel completely out of reach for your life
- When you doubt you're 'qualified enough' for a wisdom tradition because you never studied its texts
- When you're looking for a simple daily practice instead of an elaborate ritual you can't sustain
