Abhanga 3372
When external religion is hollow, the only path to discernment is direct experience. The mark of the real is not on the shrine — it is in the recognition by one who has tasted it.
The verse
Literal translation
Phakāḷa devhārā phakāḷa angārā — phakāḷa vichārā chālavile — fake shrine, fake sacred-ash — driven on fake discourse. Phakāḷa to deva phakāḷa to bhakta — karavito ghāta āṇikā jīvā — fake that deva, fake that bhakta — causes ghāta to other jīvas. Tukā mhaṇe avaghe phakāḷa he jana — anubhaviye khūṇa jāṇatīla — Tukā says: this whole jana is fake — the anubhavī will recognize the mark.
What it means
A 3-verse devastating polemic. Phakāḷa — cracked/hollow/fake. Every node of the religious system is named cracked: shrine, ash, discourse, deva-worshipped, bhakta-worshipping. Worse — the bhakta causes ghāta (destruction) to other jīvas. The criterion is shifted: only anubhava (lived-experience) can recognize the khūṇa (mark) of the real. Pure Tukārām: trust no institution; trust the test-of-anubhava.
For someone today
When external religion is hollow, the only path to discernment is direct experience. The mark of the real is not on the shrine — it is in the recognition by one who has tasted it.
