The verse
Literal translation
What-life — bhūmi-bhāra — if-no-thāra-at-feet. What-eyes — if-Puruṣōttama-not-seen. What-mouth — like-jackal — if-Name-not-uttered-nityā. Tukā: without-Pāṇḍuranga — not-even-kṣaṇa-good-for-jīva.
What it means
A 3-verse organ-by-organ exclusive-bhakti text. What is the use of being alive — a burden on the earth — if I have no refuge at your feet? When (the end) comes, what work is there for the eyes — if they do not see Puruṣōttama? What good is this mouth — running like a jackal — if it does not utter your name daily? Without Pāṇḍuranga, not even a moment is good for the soul. Each organ — life, eyes, mouth — is evaluated by its bhakti-use.
For someone today
Tukārām: life-without-your-feet-is-bhūmi-bhāra; eyes-without-Puruṣōttama, mouth-without-Name — useless.
