Abhanga 3845

The same loving power that has rescued countless people before will not be slow to rescue you either, if you hold on and trust it completely.

When you feel abandoned in a crisis and wonder if anyone will come to help you.
When you have run out of other options and are ready to place your full trust in one thing.
When you want to ask urgently for help instead of waiting quietly and passively.

The verse

Literal translation

Bahuta asatī māge sukhī kelīmbehind, (you have) made many sukhī; anāthā māulī jīvāñcī tūmyou are anāthāñcī-māulī of jīvas. Mājhiyā samkaṭā na dharīm aḷasadon't be aḷasa toward my samkaṭa; lāvunīyām kāsa pāra pāvīmtying kāsa, take (me) across. Krpāvamtā karā jyāñcā angīkārakrpāvanta — those whose angīkāra (you) do; tayā samvasāra nāhī punhāmthey have no samsāra again. Vichāritām nāhī dujā baḷivamtaconsidering, no other baḷivanta; aisā sarva-gata vyāpī kōṇīno other sarva-gata-vyāpī. Mhaṇaunī dilā muḷīm jīva-bhāvatherefore I gave jīva-bhāva at root; deha kelā vāva samādhisthamade deha empty, samādhistha. Tukā mhaṇe nāhī jāṇata āṇīkaTukā says: I don't know any other; tujaviṇa eka Pāṇḍurangāno one but you, Pāṇḍurangā.

What it means

A 5-verse canonical refuge-text by Tukārām.

The argument-arc: Behind-(in-time)-you've-saved-many; you-are-anāthāñcī-māulī. Don't-be-lazy-to-my-samkaṭa — tie-kāsa, take-across. Your-angīkāra means-no-samsāra-again. No-other-baḷivanta, sarva-gata-vyāpī. Therefore I-gave-jīva-bhāva-at-root, made-deha-samādhistha. Tukā: I-know-no-one-else, only-Pāṇḍurangā.

The closing-claim tujaviṇa eka Pāṇḍurangā (no-one-but-you, Pāṇḍurangā) is the canonical bhakti-exclusive-refuge.

For someone today

Tukārām's refuge-text. Behind, (you have) made many happy — you are the orphan-mother of jīvas. Don't be lazy toward my trouble; tying the kāsa, take (me) across. Those whose acceptance you do with compassion — they have no samsāra again. Considering, there is no other powerful one — such a all-pervading is no one else. Therefore, I have given jīva-bhāva at the root; made the deha empty, samādhistha. I do not know anyone else — none but you, Pāṇḍurangā. The verse permits the canonical bhakti-exclusive-refuge claim.
