Tukārām's canonical satire: words-without-experience yield-no-nourishment; jñāna-for-belly is-fake-pregnancy.
The verse
वांझेनें दाविलें ग†हवार लक्षणें । चिरगुटें घालून वाथयाला ॥१॥
तेवीं शब्दज्ञानी करिती चावटी । ज्ञान पोटासाटीं विकूनियां ॥ध्रु.॥
बोलाचि च कढी बोलाचा चि भात । जेवुनियां तृप्त कोण जाला ॥२॥
कागदीं लिहितां नामाची साकर । चाटितां मधुर गोडी नेदी ॥३॥
तुका म्हणे जळो जळो ते महंती । नाहीं लाज चित्तीं आठवण ॥४॥
Literal translation
Vāmjhene dāvile garhvāra lakṣaṇe — barren-woman shows pregnancy-marks; chiraguṭe ghālūna vāthayālā — stuffing rag in (the cloth). Tevīm śabda-jñānī karitī chāvaṭī — so the śabda-jñānī chatters; jñāna pōṭāsāṭīm vikūnīyām — selling jñāna for belly. Bōlāñci cha kaḍhī bōlāñcā chi bhāta — curry-of-words, rice-of-words; jevuniyām trpta kōṇa jālā — eating these, who got trpta. Kāgadīm lihitām nāmāñcī sākara — writing Name's sugar on paper; chāṭitām madhura gōḍī nedī — licking, no sweetness. Tukā mhaṇe jaḷō jaḷō te mahamtī — Tukā says: burn-burn such mahāntī; nāhī lāja chittīm āṭhavaṇa — no lāja in chitti, no āṭhavaṇa.
