Abhanga 3932
Genuine surrender is not a symbolic gesture but giving up enough that you become materially light and inwardly free, Tukaram shows.
The verse
Literal translation
Tana-mana-dhana-given — nothing-left-to-tell. No-artha-chāḍa-chinta-āśā — cut-upādhi-phāmsā. Tukā: only-Viṭhōbā-Nāma-close — no-dāma-no-rukā.
What it means
A 3-verse total-surrender + poverty-Name text. I have given body, mind, wealth to Paṇḍhari-rāya — nothing remains for me to say. No greed-of-wealth, no worry, no hope in mind — I have cut the noose of upādhi. Only Viṭhōbā's Name is close to me — I have no gold-coin, no small-coin. The pairing of total-surrender with material-poverty is canonical Tukārām — the only wealth he keeps is the Name (cf. 3890 no-spending-dhana-Nārāyaṇa-for-Name).
For someone today
Tukaram declares that he has given his body, mind, and wealth entirely to Pandharpur's Lord, so there is nothing left in him to hold back or hide. Without any greed, worry, or clinging hope, he says he has cut himself free from the noose of possessions and obligations. All he keeps close is the Lord's Name, and he has no coins in his pocket at all. This is a lesson about what genuine surrender actually looks like: not a symbolic gesture, but giving up enough that you're materially light and inwardly free.
Where this applies
- When you're weighing whether your commitment to something is real or only partial
- When you're letting go of possessions or status in exchange for inner freedom
- When material poverty coexists with a deep sense of having enough
- When you want a model of surrender that goes beyond symbolic gestures
