Abhanga 4059
A true touch of grace fills the heart with sweetness and clears inner grime, and its real sign is speech turning pure once you recognize the divine in the people around you.
The verse
Literal translation
Deva-came-on-her — jīva-gōḍa-saturated. Parva-kāḷa-fulfilled — antara-mala-gone. Pāpa-puṇya-gone — by-one-snāna-blocked. Tukā: vāṇī-śuddha — Janārdana-in-jana.
What it means
A 3-verse Deva-comes-upon-bhakta text. Deva came upon her; the soul became sweet-sweet saturated. The auspicious-time was fulfilled; the inner defilement has gone. Pāpa and puṇya are gone; by one (purifying) bath they were blocked. The speech becomes pure when Janārdana is (recognized) in the jana. Closes with the same janī-Janārdana doctrine (cf. 3735).
For someone today
Tukaram describes a moment of grace where God comes upon a devotee and her whole being becomes saturated with sweetness, as if fed and filled from the inside. That moment, arriving at just the right time, washes away the inner grime that had built up. He says that in that one purifying touch, both her past faults and her past merits are set aside, no longer the point. And the real sign of this purity, he says, is simple: speech becomes clean and true once you can recognize the divine present in the people around you.
