Endless effort and worry alone cannot reveal your true nature, but a moment of grace can suddenly show you that it was already your own.
The verse
Literal translation
Koṭi-sādhanas — wasted-effort. Deva-krpā — svarūpa-revealed. Chinta-śrama — no-uparam. Tukā: came-known — all-āpa-rūpa.
What it means
A 3-verse grace-doctrine text. What good are ten-million sādhanas — they've only made struggle. When Deva shows mercy, there's brightening in the essence. I did worry-and-labor without ending. It has come known — all has become one's-own-form (self-realized). The closing sarva-jālēm-āpa-rūpa (all-became-self-realized) is the krpā-fruit.
For someone today
Tukaram reflects that even millions of spiritual practices, done through sheer effort and struggle, do not by themselves reveal the truth, they mostly just create more strain. He says real clarity comes only when grace touches you, suddenly there is a brightening and your true nature becomes visible in a way that endless worry and labor never achieved. He admits he had worked and worried without any real end in sight, until it finally became clear that everything was already his own, already within him, waiting to be recognized rather than earned by force.
Where this applies
- When you have tried countless techniques or routines and still feel no closer to real clarity
- When exhaustion from constant effort makes you wonder if you are approaching a problem the wrong way
- When a sudden moment of grace or insight reveals something all your struggling never could
- When you realize that what you were searching for outside yourself was already within you
