Abhanga 4227
The real pollution is not another person's touch but your own anger pouring hell out through your mouth, and the true remedy is inner repentance, not ritual purification.
The verse
Literal translation
Today-mānga-touched — anga-polluted. Prāyaśchitta — Viṭhṭhal-Viṭhṭhal-in-heart. Krōdha-met — mouth-narka-pours. Anutāpa-bathe — Tukā: see-the-sun.
What it means
THE canonical anti-pollution-ritual / reframing-untouchability text. Today a Mānga touched me; my body is polluted. Let me take this atonement: Viṭhṭhal-Viṭhṭhal in the heart. (But the real pollution): anger has met me — through the mouth, hell pours out. Let me bathe in repentance — see the sun. The radical reframe: (1) the conventional pollution-from-Mānga-touch is countered not by a-ritual-bath but by the-Name-in-the-heart; (2) but-the-real-pollution-is-internal: anger-pouring-narka-from-the-mouth; (3) the-real-bath-is-anutāpa-(repentance); (4) the-real-darśana-is-of-the-sun. A double-displacement: from outer-Mānga-touch to outer-Name-in-heart; from outer-Name-in-heart to inner-anger-as-actual-pollution; from inner-anger to inner-repentance-bath. Pair with 4226 (sōvaḷa-by-deva-angīkāra), 3113 (sōmvaḷe-sāche-true-purity), 2973 (inner-quality-over-outer-jāti).
For someone today
Someone from a so-called outcaste community touched Tukaram today, and by convention this would mean his body has become polluted, needing a ritual bath to fix it. Instead Tukaram takes a different atonement: chanting Vitthal's name in his heart. Then he turns the whole idea on its head, saying the real pollution is not from that touch at all, it is when anger takes hold of him and hell pours out through his own mouth. The true bath he needs is repentance, and the true sight he seeks is the sun. This is Tukaram directly rejecting the idea that another human being's touch can defile you, and redirecting the whole notion of purity toward your own inner anger and words.
Where this applies
- When someone treats another person as impure or lesser because of their birth or background
- When you feel anger rising and are tempted to lash out with harsh words
- When you assume a ritual or outward act can fix what is really an inner failing
- When you catch yourself judging others while ignoring your own faults
