Pure devotion, like Pundalik's, is strong enough to hold even the untamable divine steady and present.
The verse
Literal translation
Bhūta-untamable — Puṇḍalīka-pinned. Sama-charaṇa-viṭā — kaṭi-kara-straight. Vāḷuvaṇṭa-santas-dance — prema-amrta-ḍullata. Tukā: Puṇḍalīka — bhakti-baḷa — you-alone-nikā (worthy-supreme).
What it means
A 3-verse Puṇḍalīka-praise text. The cosmic-being whom no one can tame — Puṇḍalīka has pinned him. With equal-feet on the brick, with hands on hips, standing straight. On the sand-bed the santas dance, rolling in love-nectar. Tukā says: Puṇḍalīka — by your devotion-strength, you alone are the worthy/supreme (nikā). The iconic Vārkarī-Viṭṭhal-pose: sama-charaṇa-on-viṭā + kaṭi-kara + ubhā-nīṭa (equal-feet-on-brick + hands-on-hips + standing-straight). The word nikā (Marathi) means good / worthy / genuine / proper / pure / supreme — Puṇḍalīka, by bhakti-strength, is the truly-worthy-bhakta. Pair with 4283 (Puṇḍalīka-FOUNDATIONAL-praise), 4361 (Vārkarī-Vaikuṇṭha-bandara-traveler).
For someone today
Tukaram praises Pundalik as the devotee whose love was so strong that he managed to hold in place a divine power that no one else could tame or control. Because of Pundalik, the Lord now stands feet together on a simple brick, hands resting on his hips, upright and waiting, right there in Pandharpur for anyone to see. Tukaram describes the saints dancing on the riverside sand, swaying and lost in a kind of sweet, overflowing love. His conclusion is that Pundalik alone deserves the highest praise, because it was the sheer strength of his devotion, not any power or ritual, that drew God to stay.
Where this applies
- When you doubt that ordinary love and devotion could ever truly hold or influence something greater than yourself
- When you want an image of steady devotion that keeps someone present rather than fleeting
- When you find joy and freedom in communal singing, dancing, or shared expressions of love
- When you need encouragement that sincere love, not power or status, is what truly matters
