Abhanga 4388

Even when your devotion still feels incomplete, keep turning your mind back toward what matters most and trust that generosity will meet you where your own effort falls short.

When a meaningful place or moment leaves your mind feeling unusually clear and settled.
When you gently pull your wandering attention back toward what you truly care about.
When you admit your effort still feels incomplete, yet you trust you will be accepted anyway.

The verse

Literal translation

Paṇḍharī-purified-mana — meditate-Viṭhōba. Sing-Nāma-gītī — make-Viṭhō-sukha-sāngāti. Sanga-of-sakhā-māyabāpa-anantā-janma. Turn-back-mana — embrace-Viṭṭhala-charaṇa. Tukā: embraced — no-bhakti-bhāva — Paṇḍharī-rāva-udāra.

What it means

A 4-verse post-pilgrimage text. Paṇḍharī has made my mind pure — now let us do meditation of Viṭhōba. Let us do this — sing the Name in song — make Viṭhō our joy-companion. Let us hold his company — he's our friend, mother-father of countless births. Turn back, mind, hold his path; embrace Viṭṭhal's feet. I've embraced (his feet) — though there's no full devotion-feeling — Tukā says: Paṇḍharī-rāva is generous. The bhakta's-honest admission: I've-embraced-but-the-bhāva-isn't-deep; the generosity-of-Paṇḍharī-rāva will-cover-this-defect.

For someone today

Tukaram describes how his visit to Pandhari has left his mind feeling genuinely purified, and from that place he resolves to meditate on Vithoba and to keep singing the Name as a song, making Vitho his companion in joy. He calls out to his own restless mind, urging it to turn back from wandering and hold onto Vitthal's path, embracing his feet the way you would hold onto a friend and a parent across countless lifetimes. What makes this verse so touching is his honesty at the end, admitting that even now, having embraced those feet, his devotion still does not feel complete or deep enough. Yet he trusts that the generosity of the Lord of Pandhari is big enough to accept him anyway, imperfections and all.
