Abhanga 4403
A temporary show of good behavior does not by itself change your real nature or earn you genuine standing, only real inner transformation does that.
The verse
जाली गाढवी दुधाळ । महिमा गाईंची पावेल ॥१॥
श्वान जालेंसे चांगलें । तरी कां सांगातें जेवील ॥ध्रु.॥
जाली सिंदळा चांगली । तरि कां पतिव्रता जाली ॥२॥
तुका म्हणे ऐशा जाति । काय उंचपण पावती ॥३॥
Literal translation
Donkey-mare-dudhāḷa — cow-mahima-not-attained. Dog-good — won't-eat-with-us. Sindaḷā-good — won't-become-pativratā. Tukā: such-jātis — what-umcha-paṇa-attain.
What it means
A 3-image nature-doesn't-elevate-by-improvement text. A donkey-mare became milk-giving — will she attain the prestige of the cow? A dog has become good-natured — would he eat with (us)? An unchaste-woman has become good — but did she become a pativratā? Tukā says: such-types — what station-of-height do they attain? The 3 culturally-loaded category-pairs — (1) gāḍhavī-gāī (donkey-cow); (2) śvāna-sangāta (dog-table-companion); (3) sindaḷā-pativratā — argue that categorical-class-membership doesn't-transfer by-improvement-alone. Reading-as-anti-fake-renunciate: likely-targets imposters who claim spiritual-status without real transformation (cf. 4299 indrāvaṇa-in-sugar-bowl, crow-baby-with-fondness, gāndhēla-poḷī — same nature-doesn't-change argument). Pair with 4299 (3-image inherent-evil-not-removed).
For someone today
This abhang uses three blunt everyday images to make one sharp point: acting differently for a while does not by itself change your real nature or earn you a new status. A donkey that happens to give milk is still not honored like a cow, and a dog that behaves well is still not invited to share the family meal. Tukaram is challenging people who put on a show of goodness or spiritual respectability without any real inner change, saying the claim rings hollow unless something has actually transformed underneath.
मराठी: हा अभंग तीन साध्या रोजच्या उदाहरणांतून एक टोकदार मुद्दा मांडतो - काही काळ वेगळे वागल्याने तुमचा खरा स्वभाव बदलत नाही किंवा तुम्हाला नवा दर्जा मिळत नाही. गाढवी दूध देऊ लागली तरी तिला गाईसारखा मान मिळत नाही, आणि कुत्रा चांगला वागू लागला तरी त्याला घरच्या ताटात सामील करून घेतले जात नाही. तुकाराम अशा लोकांना आव्हान देतात जे आतून खरा बदल न करता केवळ चांगुलपणाचे किंवा अध्यात्मिक प्रतिष्ठेचे नाटक करतात - आतून खरा बदल झाल्याशिवाय हा दावा पोकळच राहतो, असे ते म्हणतात.
