Abhanga 483

When the eyes truly behold the beauty of the divine, they become so filled and satisfied that they no longer wish to turn back toward ordinary sights.

When Nārāyaṇa appears as hīrā in kōndaṇa — and you have to recognize this register
When koṭi candra-līḷā meets at the full-moon's pūrṇa-kaḷā — and you accept this image
When the gaze is sated and does not return back — and you receive this fixity

The verse

What it means

A short deva-beauty-darśana-gaze-doesn't-return abhang. Three claims:

The opening-image: thehīrā(diamond) shines in thekōndaṇa(setting); the whole — ajaḍita-maṇi-khāṇī(jeweled-ruby-mine). Brilliance-in-setting.

The deva-comparison: so appearsNārāyaṇa; themukha(face) is thesukha-maṇḍana(ornament-of-sukha). Mukha-as-ornament-of-sukha.

The radiance-image: crores of moon-līḷā concentrated; thepūrṇimā(full-moon)'spūrṇa-kaḷā(complete-phase). Multiple-moons at fullness.

For someone today

Tukaram describes seeing the beauty of Vitthal the way a diamond shines set in gold at the heart of a jewel mine, and the divine face becomes the very ornament of joy itself. He says this radiance outshines even a full moon multiplied a hundred million times over. Once his eyes have truly taken in that sight, he says, they are so satisfied that they do not want to look away and return to ordinary things. This is what it feels like when something you see fills you completely, so completely that lesser sights simply stop pulling at your attention.
