Abhanga 606

Coming humbly for refuge creates a bond, and the one who takes you in, especially one known for caring for the lowly, cannot rightly abandon you once you've arrived.

When the bhakta is dīnā-hī-dīna and his abhimāna is on the deva — and you have to recognize this register

When the deva must preserve His own nāma by saving the bhakta — and you accept this leverage

When not good to release me now — and you receive this final-petition

The verse

मी तों दीनाहूनि दीन । माझा तूज अभिमान ॥१॥ मी तों आलों शरणागत । माझें करावें स्वहित ॥ध्रु.॥ दिनानाथा कृपाळुवा । सांभाळावें आपुल्या नांवा ॥२॥ तुका म्हणे आतां । भलें नव्हे मोकलितां ॥३॥

Literal translation

Dīnā-hī-dīna — abhimāna on You. Śaraṇāgata came — make sva-hita. Dīnānātha kṛpāḷuvā — preserve Your nāva. Tuka says: now — not good — mōkalitām.

For someone today

Tukaram says he is as lowly as it gets, yet even from the very bottom he claims a right to God's attention, simply because he has come for shelter. Once you take refuge in someone, Tukaram argues, that act itself creates an obligation, they must look after your good. He reminds God that one of God's own names is Dinanatha, Lord of the humble, and that name has to be lived up to by actually caring for the humble. So, Tuka says, it would not be right to abandon him now, after he has already thrown himself at God's feet.

मराठी: तुकाराम म्हणतात, मी अगदी खालच्या पातळीवरचा, दीनांहूनही दीन आहे, तरीही याच तळापासून मला तुझ्यावर हक्क वाटतो, कारण मी आश्रयाला आलो आहे. एकदा कोणाला शरण गेलं की, तुकाराम सांगतात, तेच शरण जाणं एक जबाबदारी निर्माण करतं, त्या व्यक्तीने आपलं भलं बघावंच लागतं. ते देवाला त्याच्याच दीनानाथ या नावाची आठवण करून देतात, आणि म्हणतात हे नाव खरं ठरवायचं असेल तर प्रत्यक्षात दीनांची काळजी घ्यावी लागेल. म्हणून तुका म्हणतात, आता मला सोडून देणं योग्य होणार नाही, कारण मी आधीच तुझ्या पायाशी येऊन पडलो आहे.
