What it means
A viśva-vyāpī-māyā-jhākulilē-chāyā-mana-binds-itself-Tuka-kōḍī-ugavā abhang. Māyā-aphorism register. Three claims (in just six lines):
-
Māyā-pervades-claim. The viśva-vyāpī māyā (universe-pervading māyā) — has cast-shadow-and-covered (jhākulilē chāyā — covered with shade-cloth). Satya has-gone over the bhōḷē (naïve, simple, gullible) (= the simple-people are taken-in by the false-as-true); the stride of avidyā (ignorance) is thōrī (great, dominant). Māyā-rules-and-the-naïve-are-taken-by-the-false. (The jhākulilē chāyā image: like a sheet thrown over to cover everything in shadow.)
-
Mind-binds-itself-claim. One's own mana — makes bandhana (bondage) on oneself. Mind-binds-the-self-by-itself. (This is the diagnostic-aphorism: bondage isn't from outside; it's the mind binding the self with itself.)
-
Closing-deva-solve-claim. Tuka says: deva; You — these kōḍī (riddles, knots) — solve (ugavā). Solve-the-knots-deva. (The kōḍī are the māyā-and-self-binding-riddles; only the deva can untie-them.)

For someone today
This abhang names the māyā-aphorism-and-deva-solve register:
-
Universe-pervading māyā has cast-shadow; the naïve are taken by the false; avidyā's stride is great. Māyā-pervades.
-
One's own mind binds the self. Mind-binds-itself.
-
Deva, solve these riddles. Solve-the-knots.
For today: māyā pervades the universe like a thrown shadow-cloth; the simple are taken in by the false-as-true; avidyā dominates; bondage is made by one's own mind on oneself; only the deva can-solve these riddles.
This abhang is Tukaram's māyā-aphorism-and-deva-solve register — one of the most-compact māyā-statements. Compare 0660 body-paradox; same dialectic-of-self-and-bondage but here organized as māyā-mind-deva sequence. The āpulē-ci-mana karavī āpaṇām bandhana aphorism — own-mind-binds-self — is one of the most-quoted lines on the inside-source-of-bondage.
Māyā-pervades.
-
Mind-binds-itself.
-
Solve-the-knots.
