Abhanga 723

Once the bhakta's being has fused into God the way a drop merges into the ocean, that union is permanent and cannot be undone.

Literal translation

What it means

A body-fused-colour-mixed-two-firmly-one-drop-in-ocean-not-separable abhang. Vedānta-merging-image register. Three claims:

1. अंग मुसावलं — रंगांत रंग मिळवला — एकीं एक दृढ — मुळा आपुल्या आलं. Body-fused-colour-mixed-claim. Theangahas beenmūsāvalē (fused-into-the-mould — like molten-metal poured into a mūsa-crucible takes-the-shape of the mould; here, the bhakta's body fused-into-Hari's mould);ranga (colour) has been mēḷavilā into ranga(one colour mixed-and-merged into another); the two havedṛḍha-jālē(firmly-become)ēka(one); come to (their) ownmūḷa(root, source). Body-fused-colour-merged-firmly-one-came-to-root.

2. सागरांत थेंबुडा — कोण्या-वाटा-निवडे. Drop-in-ocean-claim. Athēmbuḍa(drop, droplet) fallen into thesāgara(ocean); by whatvāṭā(path, way / direction) can it benivaḍē (picked-out, separated-back)?.Drop-fallen-in-ocean-no-way-to-pick-it-out. (The classicalbindu-sāgara image of merging.)

3. Tuka: नवें — नव्हे — जाणावें हें, देवें. Now-not-separable-claim. Tuka says:navē(now); navhē (it is not — i.e., not-separable, not-back-to-two);jāṇāvē hē devē(know this, deva). Now-it's-not-separable; know-this-deva. (The bhakta tells the deva: now we are firmly merged; don't try-to-separate-us.)

For someone today

Tukaram says his very body has been poured into God's mould and taken His shape, the way one color dissolves completely into another. The two have become firmly one, returned to their common root. Like a drop of water fallen into the ocean, there is no path by which it could ever be picked back out and separated again. This union is settled now, Tukaram tells God — know this: it cannot be undone.

मराठी: तुकाराम म्हणतात, त्यांचे अंग जणू देवाच्या साच्यात ओतले जाऊन त्याचेच रूप घेऊन बसले आहे, जसा एक रंग दुसऱ्या रंगात पूर्णपणे मिसळून जावा. दोघे इतके घट्ट एक झाले आहेत की ते आपल्या मूळ स्रोतापाशी परत आले आहेत. जसा सागरात पडलेला थेंब पुन्हा वेगळा काढण्याचा कोणताही मार्ग उरत नाही. हे मीलन आता कायमचे झाले आहे, असे तुकाराम देवाला सांगतात — हे लक्षात ठेव, हे कधीही उलगडणार नाही.
