Abhanga 763

By enduring hardship and handing it to God, and by giving God a name and form to dwell in, the devotee turns a one-way struggle into a shared relationship, even hosting God at home.

When enduring vipatti, gave the joining to Your hand — and you have to recognize this register
When I gave place to nāma-rūpa; otherwise who'd call You deva — and you accept this image
When Hari, I have given You place in my house — and you receive this final claim

The verse

Literal translation

Sōsōnivipattijōḍī — given — Your hand. Upakāra — this — antā — with us — vēvhāra. Nāma-rūpa — gave place — who — calls — deva? Tuka says: Hari — ṭhāva — given — ghara.

What it means

A enduring-vipatti-gave-joining-You-without-nāma-rūpa-no-deva-place-in-house abhang. Bhakta-makes-deva-deva register. Three claims:

Enduring-vipatti-Your-upakāra-claim. Enduring (sōsōni)vipatti(calamity, hardship); (I) gave thejōḍī(joining, contract, partnership) into Your hand; this is theupakāra(favor): at theantā(end), thevēvhāra(dealing) isāmhāśīm(with us). I-endured-vipatti-and-gave-joining-Your-hand; the upakāra is that-the-end-dealing-is-with-us.

Without-nāma-rūpa-no-deva-claim. (I) gave aṭhāva(place) tonāma-rūpa; (without that) who would call Youdeva?. I-gave-place-to-nāma-rūpa; without-that, no-one-would-call-You-deva. (This is a striking theological-claim: it's the bhakta's giving-place to nāma-rūpa that establishes the deva's deva-hood-in-the-world.)

Place-given-You-in-house-claim. Tuka says:Harī; I haveṭhāva dilā(given place) in (my)ghara(house). I-have-given-You-place-in-my-house. (This is final: the bhakta has given the deva place in his house — the deva is a guest in the bhakta's house, not the other-way-round.)

For someone today

Tukaram says he endured hardship and handed the whole partnership over into God's hand, and the reward for that is simply this: from then on, the dealing is with God, not carried alone. He makes an even bolder claim: it is the devotee who gives God a name and a form to dwell in, and without that gift, no one would even call God "God." So the relationship runs both ways. God shelters the devotee through hard times, but the devotee also gives God a place to be recognized and welcomed, in fact a place in his own house, as if God were a guest the devotee took in.
