Abhanga 902

Wealth stains the hand that clings to it and death always follows it, so keep the name of God as your true treasure and give it freely to whoever asks.

When we hold wealth as viṭāḷa; kāḷa trails it — and you have to recognize this register
When this is our jīvana — one Nārāyaṇa nāma is enough — and you accept this image
When keep this as treasure; give to the seeker when he comes — and you receive this final claim

The verse

Literal translation

Dravyaviṭāḷa. Kāḷapāṭhīlāga. Jīvana — Nārāyaṇa-nāma. Tuka says: jatanadānayācaka.

What it means

A we-hold-wealth-as-viṭāḷa-kāḷa-trails-it-this-is-our-jīvana-one-Nārāyaṇa-nāma-enough-keep-this-as-treasure-give-to-seeker abhang. Wealth-is-viṭāḷa-Nārāyaṇa-is-treasure register. Three claims:

Wealth-as-viṭāḷa-kāḷa-trails-claim. We holddravyaasviṭāḷa; kāḷa stays on its pāṭhī in lāga. Wealth-is-impure-touch; death-trails-it.

Nāma-is-enough-claim. Doing this, thisjīvana; oneNārāyaṇa-nāmais enough.

Treasure-and-give-to-seeker-claim. Tuka says: keeping this asjatana(= the careful-keeping, the treasure-of-the-Name); (when someone) comes —dānato theyācaka. Keep-the-Name-as-treasure-give-to-seeker. (Closing-image: while dravya is viṭāḷa, the Nāma is the real treasure — and even-this is given freely to the seeker who comes.)

For someone today

Tukaram treats wealth as something that stains the hands that hold it too tightly, because death is always following right behind it and will take it away in the end. What he keeps instead is simple: the name of Nārāyaṇa is enough to live on, his whole life is built on that one thing. And this treasure is not something he hoards. He guards it carefully, but when a seeker comes asking, he gives it away freely as a gift. You can hold money and things loosely, and let the one thing that truly matters, love and remembrance of God, be what you actually share with others.
