Abhanga 1043

When you truly hand your worries about security and outcomes to God, ordinary life among good company becomes enough, and anxious self-consciousness gives way to joy.

When now this is our work — don't forget your name — clap and dance — and you have to recognize this register
When everything has become leisure-permitted; pain of triad pushed aside — and you accept this image
When on the clean Gōdā-bank — temples of God of Gods — saints assembly — and you allow this image

For someone today

Tukaram describes what real surrender feels like day to day. Now our only task, he says, is to never forget your name; clapping cymbals and dancing in the joy of love. All the old anxieties are gone: the suffering that comes from constantly separating yourself into the one who knows, the thing known, and the knowing itself, a kind of restless self-consciousness, has been set aside, along with worry about fate. Instead, life becomes simple, sitting by the clean river bank among temples, in the company of saints, letting the day pass in contentment. Tukaram closes with the boldest line: Pandharinatha, I have no other worry, because I've placed the whole burden of my well-being on your head. When you genuinely hand over your worry about outcomes to something bigger than yourself, ordinary life becomes enough, and joy replaces anxious self-monitoring.
