For today: let kriyā be exactly the bhāva; don't keep even a cloth-end of bhēda from Hari — then he receives you as satya.
The verse
Literal translation
English: (Make me) reach the place — speaking thus together with him. Keep the kriyā as the bhāva — with the false, speak using falseness. Don't keep any antara — any cloth-end of bhēda. Tuka says: with jīva-bhāva — let me be received as satya by the Deva.
Word-by-word gloss
| Marathi | Meaning |
|---|---|
| पाववावें ठाया | "(make me) reach the ṭhāya (place)" |
| ऐसें सवें बोलों तया | "such — together (savē) — speak with him" |
| भावा ऐसी क्रिया राखे | "keep the kriyā (action) as the bhāva (intention)" |
| खोट्या खोटेपणें वाखे | "with the khōṭā (false-one) — speak (vākhē) using khōṭa-paṇa (false-ness)" |
| न ठेवूं अंतर कांहीं भेदाचा पदर | "don't keep any antara (interior-distance) — any pādara (cloth-end / fold) of bhēda (difference)" |
| जीवें भावें सत्या मानविजे देवें | "with jīva-bhāva — let (me) be received as satya by the Deva" |
What it means
Bhāva-kriyā alignment teaching. Three rules for clean dealing with Hari:
-
Bhāvā aisī kriyā rākhē — keep the kriyā (action) just as the bhāva (intention). No gap between what is felt and what is done.
-
Khōṭyā khōṭēpaṇē vākhē — with the khōṭā (false-one), speak with khōṭa-paṇa (falseness/match-the-tone). Tukaram is being practical-realistic here: with deceivers, deal in the deceiver's mode (don't try to be sincere with one playing false). The point isn't to be false, but to not pretend the false-one is true.
-
Na ṭhēvūm antara — kāmhīm bhēdācā padara — don't keep any interior-distance (with Hari), any cloth-end of bhēda (difference). The padara (the cloth-fold worn by women, the pallav) is the smallest thing that can hide something. Even that small cloth-fold of bhēda isn't to be kept.
The closing — jīvē bhāvē satyā mānavijē Devē — with jīva-bhāva, let me be received as satya by the Deva — completes the logic: when bhāva-kriyā align and no bhēda-padara hides, Hari can receive you as satya.
