Abhanga 1603

When you'd describe Viṭṭhal's protective-arrival — duḥkha-not-seen; seated on kṛpā-throne; kṣīra-sāgara-bed without wind; kept at his foot in all places

The verse

Literal translation

English: Not-to-be-seen has been done by this Viṭhṭhal to duḥkha. On the kṛpā-throne, on the adhiṣṭhāna, has seated me. The blowing wind does not strike — at the kṣīra-sāgara-bed. Tuka says: in all places — me, at his foot, he has kept.

What it means

Viṭṭhal-shielded-me-from-suffering abhang. Vaikuṇṭha-gamana cluster.

The opening: na dēkhijē aisēm kēlēm — yā Viṭhṭhalēm duḥkhāsīnot-to-be-seen has been done by this Viṭhṭhal — to duḥkha. Viṭhṭhal has made suffering invisible / not-to-be-seensuffering has been removed from sight.

The throne-seating: kṛpēciyē simhāsanīm — adhiṣṭhānīm baisavilēmon the kṛpā-throne, on the adhiṣṭhāna, has seated me. Adhiṣṭhāna = foundational-seat / underlying-substrate. Seated me on the very-throne-of-grace.

The kṣīra-sāgara-bed: vājatā tō nalagē vārā — kṣīra-sāgarā śayanīmthe blowing wind does not strike — at the kṣīra-sāgara-bed. Kṣīra-sāgara = the milk-ocean on which Viṣṇu reclines (= his cosmic-rest-place on the serpent Ananta). No-wind-strikes-thereperfect repose, beyond all disturbance. (= Tuka has been placed at the very kṣīra-sāgara-bed where the Lord himself rests.)

The closing: avaghē ṭhāyīm — maja pāyīm rākhilēmin all places, me, at his foot, has kept. In every place, he has kept me at his footno place where the bhakta is removed from the foot.

This abhang is a grateful-acknowledgement of pre-ascension protection — the kṣīra-sāgara-bed image suggests Tuka has already been placed at the cosmic-seat of Viṣṇu even before formal-departure from the body.

For someone today

For today: Viṭhṭhal has made suffering not-to-be-seen for me; on the throne of grace, on the foundational-seat, he has seated me; even the blowing wind doesn't strike there — at the kṣīra-sāgara-bed; Tuka says — in every place, he has kept me at his foot.
