What it means
Vārkarīs-departing-Pandhari-with-reply abhang. Foundational Vārkarī-departure-image.
The opening: hō'īla niropa ghētalā yāvarī — rauḷā-bhītarī jā'ūniyām — message received — going inside the temple. Rauḷa = temple. The Vārkarīs-receive-the-Lord's-reply inside-the-temple.
The auspicious-departure: karūniyām dadhi-mangala-bhōjana — prayāṇa śakuna-su-muhūrtē — after dadhi-mangala-meal — prayāṇa at the auspicious-moment. Dadhi-mangala-bhōjana = the auspicious-curd-meal (= the traditional pre-departure ritual-meal of curd, milk, and sweets); śakuna-su-muhūrta = the auspicious-omen-time. Standard departure-ritual: eat-the-curd-meal, then-leave at-the-auspicious-time.
The choked-throats: hōtīla dāṭalē sad-gadita kaṇṭhī — bharatē yā pōṭī viyōgācē — throats choked with sad-gadita — heart full of viyōga. Sad-gadita = the choked-sob; viyōga = separation-pain. The Vārkarīs-leaving-Pandhari are-overcome with-separation-pain — throats-choked with-sobs.
The kṣēma-embraces: yērayērām bhēṭī kṣēma ālinganē — kēlīm samādhāna hōtīm santī — mutual kṣēma-embraces — the saints made samādhāna. Kṣēma ālingana = the well-being-embrace. The saints comfort-each-other with-mutual-embraces.
The closing-image: Tukā mhaṇē cālī na sāhē manāsa — pāhātī kaḷasa para-paratōm — Tuka says: walking can't bear the mind — they look at the kaḷasa repeatedly. Kaḷasa = the temple-spire; para-paratōm = repeatedly, again-and-again. The Vārkarīs walk-away-but-can't-bear-it; they-keep-looking-back at the temple-spire.
This is a wonderful Vārkarī-departure-image — the choked-throats, mutual-embraces, looking-back at-the-kaḷasa para-paratōm. Foundational image of Vārkarī-pilgrim-departure-from-Pandhari.
