Abhanga 2056

Once an old dispute is properly settled, stop replaying it, and instead offer everything you do from now on as sincere service.

The verse

Literal translation

What it means

Old-tangle-warded-off-by-fourfold-council abhang.

The opening: vārilē ligāḍa — bahu-disāñchē hē jāḍa — the tangle warded off — this many-days' weight. Ligāḍa = tangle, entanglement. Jāḍa = thick/heavy weight. The many-days'-tangle warded-off.

The no-talk: na bōlāvē aisē kēlē — kāhīm vā'ugē tituḷē — made it so no-talk-needed — whatever wasted, that much. No-further-talk required; whatever-was-wasted is-just-that-much.

The fourfold-council: jālā chaughāñchāra — gēlā khaṇḍōni vēvhāra — became the fourfold council — the deal-settling done. Chaughāñchāra = fourfold-conduct, council-of-four. The fourfold-council convened; the deal (vēvhāra) settled by-cutting. A reference to either the four-saints-as-arbiters or a four-fold-decision-process.

The closing: Tukā mhaṇē Dēvā — karīna tē ghyāvī sēvā — Tuka says: Deva — what I do — accept as sēvā. Whatever-I-do-from-now-on, accept-as-sēvā (= the dispute settled, the relationship-restored-as-service).
