Abhanga 2952

Let your mind become fully absorbed in seeing the divine, and trust that this closeness, not worldly pleasure, is what makes your life truly worthwhile.

When you want your scattered wants and distractions to narrow into one clear focus.
When worldly pleasures that used to satisfy you have started to feel hollow.
When you want a simple, humble way to ask for closeness with the divine rather than achievement.

The verse

Literal translation

Mājhyā manā lāgō chāḷālet my mind havechāḷā(engagement, fascination); pahāvayā Viṭhṭhalā ḍōḷāmto see Viṭhṭhal in (my) eye. Āṇīka nāhī chāḍathere is no otherchāḍa(craving); na lage samsāra hā gōḍathis samsāra is notgōḍa(sweet) to me. Tari cha phaḷa janmā ālōmonly-then (is there)phaḷa(fruit) of (my) coming tojanma; saratā Pāṇḍurangī jālōm(I) becamesaratā(qualified, admitted) at Pāṇḍurangī. Tukā says: DevāDeva; deī charaṇāñcī sevāgive (me)sevāof (your) feet.

What it means

A short canonical mind-engaged-with-Viṭṭhal-eye-darśana yearning verse. Mājhyā manā lāgō chāḷā — pahāvayā Viṭhṭhalā ḍōḷāmlet my mind have engagement — to see Viṭṭhal in (my) eye. The opening-yearning: let-my-mind-be-engaged in seeing-Viṭṭhal-in-the-eye.

Āṇīka nāhī chāḍa — na lage samsāra hā gōḍano other craving — samsāra not sweet. The exclusive-yearning.

Tari cha phaḷa janmā ālōm — saratā Pāṇḍurangī jālōmonly-then fruit-of-birth — became saratā at Pāṇḍurangī. The fruit-of-birth-claim: birth is fruitful only-when one becomes-saratā (admitted, valid) at Pāṇḍurangī. (Pairs with 2825 saratē-karā-Pāṇḍurangī.)

The close: Tukā mhaṇe Devā — deī charaṇāñcī sevāgive sevā of feet. The final-petition.

For someone today

Tukaram longs for his mind to become completely absorbed in the simple act of gazing at Vitthal with his own eyes. He has no other craving left, and the pleasures of ordinary worldly life no longer feel sweet to him. Only in that closeness, he says, does his birth finally bear fruit — only there does he feel truly accepted and complete. So he asks the Lord for one simple gift: to be allowed to serve at his feet.
