Abhanga 3220
None of what we do is entirely our own doing, we are like puppets moved by strings in a greater hand, so credit and control should be held humbly.
The verse
काय नाहीं माझे अंतरीं वसति । व्यापक हा भूतीं सकळां नांदे ॥१॥
चत्तिासी प्रसाद होईंल चळण । तें चि तें वळण मनासही ॥ध्रु.॥
सर्व शक्ति जीवीं राहिल्या कुंटित । नाहीं केलें होत आपुलें तें ॥२॥
तुका म्हणे दोरी खांब सूत्र्या हातीं । नाचवी नाचती जडें तैसीं ॥३॥
Literal translation
What-not-in-antar-dwelling? vyāpaka-bhūtīm-sakaḷām-nāmde. Chitta-prasāda-chaḷaṇa; same-vaḷaṇa for-mana. All-śakti-kumtita; not-made-our-own. Tukā: rope-pillar-sūtra in-puppeteer's-hand; makes-jaḍa-puppets-dance.
What it means
A canonical puppet-image text. The Lord-as-puppeteer holds-the-strings; all-our-actions are-his-pulling.
For someone today
There is nothing that does not live within me — the Lord pervades every being and dwells in all of them. Whatever grace or movement touches my heart shapes my mind in just the same way. All my own strength turns out to be powerless; nothing I have made is truly my own doing. Tukārām says we are like puppets — with the string and the pole held in the puppeteer's hand, we dance exactly as we are moved.
मराठी: माझ्या अंतरात असे काहीच नाही जे नाही — हा व्यापक परमात्मा सर्व चराचरांत नांदतो आहे. जे काही चित्ताला स्पर्शून जाते, त्याच वळणाने मनही वळते. सर्व शक्ती जीवात कुंठित होऊन जातात; जे काही घडते ते खरे तर माझे स्वतःचे केलेले नसतेच. तुकाराम म्हणतात, जशी दोरी आणि खांब सूत्रधाराच्या हातात असतात, आणि त्याच्याच इशाऱ्यावर बाहुल्या नाचतात, तसेच आपणही देवाच्या हातातील बाहुल्यांसारखे नाचत असतो.
