Tukaram describes a painful, unsettling moment: during a sacred recital, something went wrong and his mind was deeply pained. He senses that the presence of someone else's wrongdoing tainted that very moment of what should have been a pure encounter, a darshan. As a result, ugly, harmful words reached his ears and disturbed him. It is an honest admission that even sacred spaces and sacred times can be spoiled by the negativity someone else brings into them, and that such moments genuinely hurt.
The verse
Literal translation
What-amangaḷa-time arose? Today mana-pained, sīṇa at-kathā-time. By-pāpa's-guṇa, at-their-veḷa darśana. Tukā: came-to-kāna duṣṭa-vāṇī.
What it means
A short 3-verse observation. Inauspicious-moment, distress-at-kathā-time, evil-speech-fell-in-ear.
For someone today
Tukaram describes a painful, unsettling moment: during a sacred recital, something went wrong and his mind was deeply pained.
Where this applies
- When something disrespectful happens right in the middle of a moment meant to be sacred or peaceful, like a prayer or ceremony.
- When someone else's negativity or wrongdoing intrudes on an experience you were hoping would be pure and uplifting.
- When cruel or careless words reach your ears and leave you shaken even during a meaningful gathering.
- When you feel disturbed after a bad encounter and want to name that hurt honestly rather than pretend it didn't happen.
