Abhanga 3297
Protecting devotion sometimes means firmly and repeatedly driving away worldly distractions, even when they sneak back in disguised as belonging there.
The verse
पाठी लागे तया दवडीं दुरी । घालीं या बाहेरी संवसारा ॥१॥
येउनि दडें तुमच्या पायीं । धांवें तई छो म्हणा ॥ध्रु.॥
पारखियाचा वास पडे । खटबड उठी तें ॥२॥
तुका म्हणे लाविला धाक । नेदी ताक खाऊं कोणी ॥३॥
Literal translation
Chases-after-(me), chase-it-far; throw-out-of-samsāra. Comes-and-hides at-your-pāya; runs — say chō. Pārakhī-smell, khaṭabaḍa-rises. Tukā: dhāka-set-up, doesn't-let-take-tāka.
What it means
A short 3-verse household-image. Samsāra-as-a-thing-to-chase-from-the-house; the-Lord-is-the-protector-who-keeps-it-out.
For someone today
Tukaram pictures samsara, worldly entanglement, as an unwelcome animal that keeps sneaking back into the house, even hiding right at the Lord's feet as if that gives it a right to stay. But the devotee's job, like an alert householder, is to chase it out again and again and not let it steal what belongs to the sacred space. Tukaram says a real deterrent has been set up so no outsider gets to help themselves to the household's buttermilk. The point is that protecting your devotion sometimes takes firm, repeated boundary-setting, especially when the distraction tries to sneak back in looking innocent or even pious.
मराठी: तुकाराम महाराज संसाराचे वर्णन एका न बोलावलेल्या प्राण्यासारखे करतात, जो सतत घरात परत घुसण्याचा प्रयत्न करतो, अगदी देवाच्या पायाशी लपून जणू आपला हक्कच असल्यासारखे वागतो. पण भक्ताचे काम म्हणजे जागरूक गृहस्थासारखे त्याला वारंवार ठामपणे हाकलून देणे आणि पवित्र जागेतील काहीही त्याला चोरू न देणे. तुकाराम म्हणतात की असा खरा धाक निर्माण केला आहे की कोणीही परका येऊन घरातले ताक घेऊ शकत नाही. याचा अर्थ असा की आपली भक्ती जपण्यासाठी कधी कधी ठाम आणि सातत्यपूर्ण सीमारेषा आखाव्या लागतात, विशेषतः जेव्हा विचलित करणारी गोष्ट निरागस किंवा पवित्र वेषात परत येण्याचा प्रयत्न करते.
